Sinus Augmentation Study
Dear Patients:
Our Practice is currently participating in a study comparing two different sinus graft
materials. Please review the page on Sinus Augmentation
prior to reading this article.
The graft materials used are BioOss (Osteohealth Co., Shirley, NY) and Irradiated
Cancellous Bone (IRC) (Rocky Mountain Tissue Bank, Aurora, CO). The former is a Xenograft and the latter is an Allograft of human origin. Both have been used
consistently in sinus augmentations for many years and have shown excellent results. The
study is trying to challenge, however, that the IRC will yield quicker results. Typically
the waiting period between the Sinus Augmentation and the Implant placement is 9 to 12
months, in a two-stage procedure with BioOss. Many practitioners (us included) have been
very successful using IRC and placing the implants after 5-6 months after the Sinus Augmentation was performed, which translates into
tremendous time savings for the patient.
We would like to involve as many patients as possible for this study. We are looking
for patients who need a bilateral Sinus Augmentation (left
upper and right upper side). If you know that you need these procedures done through a
previous diagnosis, feel free to call us for more information. If you are not sure, you
may call our office to set up a free consultation appointment to determine, whether you
are a candidate. Most people, who either wear dentures or have had teeth missing in BOTH
back areas of the upper jaw for awhile, are usually good candidates.
As an incentive for you to participate in this study, we would only charge you for the
graft material used, which is only a fraction of the cost of the regular procedure.
If you turn out to be a good candidate for the study, you will receive a protocol,
describing the study and procedures done to you in great detail. The only difference
between the regular surgery and the study surgery is that we will remove a few millimeters
of bone in depth from your ridge, while we are placing the implants. This way there will be
no extra surgery for you and there will definitely be no adverse side effects, since the
test bone is taken from an area distant to the implant sites and the void will fill in
with bone again within a few weeks. There will be no additional discomfort or precautions
necessary on your part from this procedure.
The bone sample will then be histologically analyzed and evaluated. It is our hope that
through this study we can shorten the waiting time between Sinus Augmentation procedures
and the actual implant placement.
All consultations (including x-rays) with respect to your candidacy for this study will
be free of charge. If you have any questions regarding this study, either e-mail us at:
